What to Expect at the Centre
Our affordable facilities are designed to offer you a safe, comfortable environment for your retreat, workshop or quiet time to rest. Accommodation offerings are:
- 12 double chalets with attached bathrooms, two of which have basic self-catering facilities. Self catering facilities include microwave, toaster, kettle and fridge
- 1 self-catering cottage "St Augustine" with 3 bedrooms, one bathroom (shower and toilet) and a spacious kitchen / living area. Cooking facilities include microwave, kettle, toaster, electric frying pan and freezer-fridge.
- Rooms are serviced weekly for longer stays.
All rooms are equipped with ceiling fans. Windows are screened to help prevent mosquitoes. Additional accommodation for large groups can be arranged with nearby lodges.
A large dining hall with fully equipped kitchen can double as a conference facility (max 50 people). It has a large LED display and wifi can be arranged.
A small library and meeting room are available for reading, interviews, small meetings and counselling. Retreat groups may book the meeting room for their use.
A craft/art studio is available for artist's residencies and creative workshops.
Coming to a small town in a rural area you may want to know what is available at the Centre.
WATER
Water comes from a borehole on site which is filtered and distributed to the buildings. While this is generally safe to drink we do provide bottles of purified water from the main kitchen as an extra precaution.
ELECTRICTY
We have a large solar array which provides most of the power for the centre while grid power is avalable. In the event of a grid power outage the main dining area has a battery backup which powers lights and a standby water pump. We are planning to extend the backup power to other areas in the future and are raising funds for this. Please consider making donation to this.
INTERNET and PHONE
Wifi is available to guests on request. It is available in the south rooms and the main spaces such as dining hall, chapel, meeting room and library. Some retreatants appreciate the absence of wifi as a welcome break from the very on line nature of day to day life. Retreat directors will be able to choose whether to make wifi available to retreatants. Cellular coverage is fair and phone calls and limited cellular data are generally well supported.
PRINTING
A printer is available on site if material for a programme needs to be printed. Costs for printing will charged for. There is also a print shop in the town that will print larger formats and on a variety of media.
The chapel seats approximately 150 people. Retreatants are free to use the chapel. If more than one group is present at the centre arrangements should be made with centre management if one group wishes to use it for a session exclusively.
There is normally Mass every Sunday morning attended by the local community.
The town is situated on the St Lucia Estuary, in the Isimangaliso Wetland Park. It is surrounded by natural indigenous forest with wildlife and an abundance of bird life. The forest is 100m from the retreat centre with paths going through lush, dense trees. Small antelope can often be seen here. Hippos come out to graze at night and can often be seen walking through the town. They should be treated with caution. Provided you keep a safe distance they will not be hostile.
The town of St Lucia has shops where most grocery and general supplies can be found. There is a pharmacy and a resident doctor as well as emergency medical service. A number of restaurants offer quality food and drink in a pleasant setting.
The Centre buildings are set in a spacious garden of indigenous trees, shrubs and lawns. A labyrinth is situated under a large coral tree in front of the chapel.
